Hydrofoils and Seaplanes Are Bringing Back a Faster Way to Cross the Water
For decades, traveling between islands or coastal cities has usually meant choosing between a slow ferry or a short regional flight. Now, a new generation of electric boats, hydrofoils, and modern seaplanes is making short-distance water travel feel interesting again.
Hydrofoil boats rise above the surface of the water as they gain speed, reducing drag and creating a smoother ride. At the same time, seaplanes remain useful because they can operate between places that do not have large airports. Both designs offer a different way to think about transportation in areas surrounded by lakes, oceans, and bays.
The idea is not exactly new. Seaplanes have been around for over a century, and hydrofoil technology has existed for decades. What makes the trend feel current is the push for quieter engines, cleaner transportation, and faster connections between places that are close by distance but difficult to reach by road.
For travelers, the appeal is simple: skip the highway, avoid a large airport, and move directly across the water. The result is a style of travel that feels practical, efficient, and a little futuristic.
